Air sealing your attic should be the first step you take to mitigate ice dams, heat loss, or draft windows in your home this winter. It doesn't matter how much insulation you have if there are large gaps in your upper envelope between the conditioned space of your home and your vented attic air space. Plus often times, since heat rises, the escaping heat into the attic creates a negative pressure in the home which sucks cold air in through the windows & walls. If we seal off the attic space, it will also reduce the negative pressure and reduce the amount of cold air coming into the home as well.
As a former Home Inspector, I can tell you that the heated air of your home escaping into your attic space is usually the primary cause for ice dams forming on your roof & curling shingles. It is also responsible for a considerable amount of energy loss from your home.
